OpenAI and ChatGPT have covered enough digital space already, so it's time we also take a peek at their future plans.
For AI Rookies
Non-IT folks have a tendency to think of everything related to IT as one collective entity, but as insiders, we know that it couldn’t be any further from the truth. Front-end folks barely understand what happens in the backend, and the backend team thinks of front-end as a fairly easy job.
The worst-case scenario of all might be the invisible wall of unknown between AI and non-AI folks.
We have heard of many aspects of AI and the complex algorithms and data sets that these algorithms feed on, but this world of AI and ML is still unknown to many of us at large.
To fill this gap, we will pick one small topic from the AI world in the coming weeks and try to figure out the basics in the most straightforward language possible. Learning together is more fun, right?
This article explores the basics of AGI and how OpenAI plans to use it.
What is AGI?
AGI is Artificial General Intelligence, also referred to as “strong AI” or “full AI”.
It’s a type of artificial intelligence that would be capable of performing any intellectual task that a human being can do.
AGI would be able to reason, plan, learn, and communicate in natural language, and be able to adapt to new situations and contexts in much the same way as a human being can.
It would be able to generalize its knowledge and apply it to new situations, as well as understand abstract concepts and generate new ideas.
While current AI-based systems are good at performing specific tasks like image recognition or language translation, they lack the adaptability of human intelligence.
Achieving AGI will require significant advances in AI research and development, and OpenAI aims to achieve this.
What’s OpenAI?
OpenAI is an artificial intelligence research organization founded in 2015 by a group of technology leaders, including Elon Musk, Sam Altman, and Greg Brockman.
The mission of OpenAI is to create safe and beneficial AI that benefits humanity as a whole.
OpenAI conducts research in various areas of AI, such as natural language processing, computer vision, robotics, and machine learning. The organization has developed several cutting-edge AI technologies, such as GPT-3, a language model that can generate human-like text, and DALL-E, an AI system that can create images from textual descriptions.
OpenAI is also involved in creating open-source tools and platforms for developers to build and deploy AI applications.
The organization collaborates with researchers, universities, and companies to advance the field of AI and ensure that the benefits of AI are accessible to everyone.
OpenAI and AGI
OpenAI believes in the positive impact AGI would create for humanity, but it is not oblivious to the ill effects AGI is capable of causing.
In this blog, Sam Altman breaks down the company’s vision to build a robust system that would help humanity massively.
While the company is hopeful for the future, they do plan to build this system based on a constant feedback loop from the users.
The idea behind this seems to be pretty simple — Just like the users, the creators of AGI want to see how AGI evolves and the impact, both positive and negative, it would have on society. This also means that policymakers also get time to adjust to this evolving new reality and set new regulations around it.
OpenAI also wants to align its models by bringing AGI’s capabilities and safety measures together.
Another noteworthy statement made by Sam Altman is OpenAI’s willingness to discuss the benefits and concerns of building such systems at a global level, along with extending an olive branch to fellow competitors to work on the safety aspect of building AGI.
Unlike any other technology that came into existence in the past, AI brings with it a load of anxiety and fear.
None of us knows for sure what the future holds or how AGI will evolve, but to think of any technology only in terms of the ill effects it can cause is plain stupid, and It’s not how human beings have evolved in the past.
